Digital Video Project: The Story Behind Art
Ms. Mallory Ketterer
Subject: Digital Media
Grade Level: 11th
Unit of Study: iMovie
Title of Lesson: The Story Behind Art
Preparation:
-Spend one-day teaching students about the different types and styles of films students can create with this project.
-Spend one day teaching the technology of the video camera and choosing their photo or painting.
-Spend one day on the program iMovie.
-Spend one day on audio, music, sound affects.
-Spend four/five days working on shooting/editing the film. (If more time is needed students can meet outside of class.)
-Spend one day presenting to the class.
Total class time: 9-10 classes
Objective of Lesson:
Students in groups of three will take a photograph or painting and bring it to life. They must have the original scene from the painting or photograph in their film. The video must not be shorter than 1min and no longer than 2min. They can either act out what happened before the scene, after or during the scene in the painting or photo they choose.
Challenges:
There will be many challenges to this project. Especially when you are using all technology. Programs will not work, projects will get deleted, cameras will get broken, audio will be missing, computers will crash, there are so many challenges you will face when teaching this lesson. What you have to remember is to be flexible and prepared. Flexible for anything to happen and prepared for the worst so you know what to do when something goes wrong and steer your students in the right direction.
Video Project
Our video project was a success! My partner and I filmed all of our footage in chapters. Which made it really easy to put together as a finished video. Also we put in the audio after we had filmed all of our scenes. We could have improved in the audio and the amount of footage we filmed. At first we thought it would be best to use a microphone and talk at the same time... well the microphone did not work and we did not check the clips to see if it worked. All so we had A LOT of footage! Much more than we needed, I guess Kara and I wanted each scene to be perfect. So next time I would not use a microphone and try and tape over scenes I did not want to use. This project aside from being extremely fun will help me a lot in the class room. I can have my students make art through their videos. This experience could help a student realize this is what they want to do when they get older. I also can incorporate a lot of other programs like photoshop, illustrator, imovie and many other programs into the film project.

Interactive White Boards
Interactive White boards are a wonderful addition to the classroom. Interactive White boards, I feel help the students learn by doing. The students are also more engaged in the lesson. They don't just sit and listen anymore they have to follow along and recognize what it is the teacher is asking them.
At first the technology is frustrating like all new programs that are presented to you without prior knowledge. Though, once I became familiar with the program and the different applications I began to feel comfortable with the program.
There are many pros in using interactive white boards one of which the students get a hands on experience in learning and understanding new material. I also feel students in todays world feel the need to be stimulated at all times, especially with technology today. Students want to watch something, they want to interact with something technical because they are familiar with technology and understand how to learn from it. Some cons are technology sometimes does not cooperate and does not work at times and can through your whole lesson off, because of one glitch. Also you have to think about the students you want to create lesson that are both interactive for you and your class. If you fail to remember that, your students will be bored and unenthusiastic about your lesson.
I could incorporate many lesson plans in to the Interactive smart board. We can learn about artists and then virtually visit museums and see the paintings or sculptures. Teaching brush strokes and showing students what kinda of brush mark Vincent Van Gogh used in his "Starry Night" or "Self portrait". I could also teach perspective and use the rulers and have the students create depth and three dimensional forms on the white board,

Inspiration
The program Inspiration, is a very fun and useful tool. When thinking of ways I could incorporate this software into my classroom many ideas come to mind.
1.) Make Diagrams.
2.) Time lines of Artist life and movements.
3.) Students could use Inspiration when presenting a project.
4.) Explaining right and left brain thinking to my class.
5.) Advanced studio topics class could use Inspiration to map out their project ideas for the year.
6.) Teaching elements and principles of design, I could use diagram to show which elements go where and how to use them properly together.
7.) When learning about a new medium, I can use picture to describe what different materials make up type of art and how they are all incorporated together.
8.) I could even use it to make tests and quizzes for my students.
9.) If we go on a field trip to a museum, I could make a worksheet for the students to fill out and hand in when we are finished.
10.) Students can even use it if they are making a visual report or even on a power point it could be incorporated.

Social Bookmarking
Social bookmarking is a very useful tool for teachers as well as anyone in a professional field. Social bookmarking makes remembering websites easy! Once you have found a website you like you can tag it and label the site under which you are going to use it. This is great for organization, especially if you like the site but are not going to use it right away. Months later you are able to find that site easily because of the tag you put it under.
Friends and other colleagues can also view your sites that you tag. This is very helpful for other teachers, they can share and exchange websites that will enhance their lessons and their students. Together you are able to find fun and interesting website that will benefit everyone.
